After David's failed attempt to organise a WWSR course, seeing as I should have done one of these a long time ago, and as there seemed to be quite a bit of interest at the meeting the other day, I have "volunteered" to organise a course for the club.
It is a 2 day course designed for whitewater paddlers who want to gain or improve their whitewater Safety and Rescue techniques. The course is suitable for both open boaters and kayakers and fulfils the Safety and Rescue training requirements for the BCU/UKCC 4 Star Awards. From speaking to other people who have done the course it is really helpful for anyone who is planning on getting into any river paddling.
Course content includes:
Boat-based rescues
Aggressive & defensive swimming
Throwline use
Harness use
Cinches, stoppers & entrapments
I'm hoping to organise a course at the Tryweryn sometime between now and Christmas (sooner rather than later - but they are quite booked up!). I phoned the other day and the woman hasn't phoned me back with possible dates, so I'll phone again on Monday.
The cost is £516 per 6 people - so if we fill the spaces it will be £86 per person (not including accomodation and transport). The club should subsidize half of the cost. Once I have heard what dates Tryweryn can do, I will book an instructor for 6 people, but if more are interested I will book 2 instructors so there are 12 spaces. There are also a few people I know if Sheffield that may also be interested if we need to make up numbers.
From looking into it before Tryweryn does seem to offer the most reasonable deal, I have heard good feedback about their courses and they also provide drysuits! So I'm trying them first, but if we don't have any luck, I'll look into the other options.
Since the BCU syllabus has changed you now have to be 16 to go on the course.
If you are interested either post on here or PM me your email address and I will keep you updated.
Sorry about the long message!
